Damn you, Akismet!

November 28, 2006

So I haven’t been using WordPress for any longer than, say, two weeks. At the absolute most. Well just today I discover this ‘Akismet’ thing that blocks what it believes are spam comments. Okay, great. It would be helpful if there was some notification to TELL me there were spam comments in there.

After just checking the Akismet page, it told me it’s blocked 6 spam comments to date. Only one of them was displayed however, and was indeed not spam at all. So after I checked ‘Not Spam’, I tried looking for the remaining five. What? No where? Uh… okay, so it must have deleted them, I guess — even though it states these ’spam’ comments are deleted after FIFTEEN days.

Honestly, I would not at all be surprised if none of them were actual spam. Thank you technology, for you are my saviour. /End sarcasm.

Blah blah, don’t judge a book by its cover.

November 24, 2006

I’ve always disliked the saying, “You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.” Why the hell not? I’ll do as I please, thank you. I always judge a book by its cover. And generally speaking, it doesn’t misguide me.

I’ve noticed that I tend to do the same thing with websites — if I don’t like the sound of the domain/site name or the look of the layout, then that’s it. I usually won’t give it a second thought. Yeah, it’s pretty stupid, I guess, but seriously: HOW MANY BOOKS AND WEBSITES ARE OUT THERE?  I don’t want to rummage through every single one until I find something that remotely interests me, so why not just make it easy and narrow it down to simple aesthetics? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

You know what really bugs me?

November 24, 2006

It bugs me when I find some sweet-arse blogs on the intarweb and then discover that the latest entry is going on three months old.

Who does that?! WHY would you go to the trouble of paying for a domain/hosting and then not touch the thing in that long? I see no logic in this whatsoever.

Drooling over just the thought of food?

November 20, 2006

Well, if you’re like some people, just the thought of delectable treats may have you salivating in no time. Wait — is ’salivating’ a word? Hey, I have been known to make up words. Example: analysation. Yes, you read correctly. ‘Analysis’ *ahem* slipped my mind at the time… ‘the time’ being whilst I was in English class. Let’s not go there.

You may be an Iron Chef in the making, or simply enjoy looking at pictures of naughty culinary delights. If you fit into either of these categories, then sneak your way into the curtained-off area and delve into the Food Porn section of Splashfood.com. And in case you’re sitting there cringing at the thought of what ‘food porn’ may be, Wikipedia defines it as “…a term for a spectacular visual presentation of cooking or eating in adverts, infomercials, cooking shows or other visual media. The most notable example may be Iron Chef, which has very little educational value, but scores remarkably high on the visual spectacle of cooking, cooking implements and the ingredients of food preparation.”

I’d just like to point out (for the sheer sake of it) that I did not know Wikipedia would also be referring to Iron Chef. I guess it’s true that great minds think alike.

Looking for a free file upload service?

November 19, 2006

If you go to Google and search for file uploading services, I’m sure you will be bombarded with a multitude of useless links. If, however, you do not wish to trawl through hundreds of links to find a decent host, then give a couple of these links a shot.

SendSpace.com:
My personal favourite. Nice and simple interface, does not require registration. Maximum file size permitted to upload is 300MB. You may downloaded up to 1G of files per day.

MegaUpload.com:
Also features a nice and clean interface. Registration is not required but free and paid are available. Anonymous uploads, i.e. from non-registered users, will be stored on the server for 21 days after the latest download. Maximum file upload size of 500MB.

PutStuff.com:
Simple design without any confusing links or other tidbits. Maximum file size for upload is 100MB, and files will be deleted from their server 30 days after the last download.

UpFile.com:
The site looks a little cluttered, but isn’t hard to use. Claims upload size to be unlimited, however ‘recommends’ files of no higher than 2G so as to be sure of the service’s stability. Downloads for premium users start instantly, however free users’ downloads do not. I’m not entirely sure what this means, so if anybody would like to test it then be sure to let me know how it goes.
